Then he had met her, and something about what they had gone through had told him that he should be grateful to be alive. To have someone love him after all that time.
Paulina caught him staring at her. He felt his cheeks getting warm, and looked away for a moment. She laughed, and Rose looked between them as if they were crazy. She wouldn’t understand what they meant when they did this for a long time. The longer the kept her innocence, the better, thought Cobalt – just like a typical father.
Rose wiggled out of Paulina’s grip to run to him. He laughed a little at her when she asked why mommy was giggling at him. Had he done something wrong? He laughed a little more when she asked that particular question.
“No. I did nothing wrong.” He kissed her softly. “I love you, honey.” She giggled a little at this, but didn’t try to dispute it. She snuggled into him, and ended up falling fast asleep again. Paulina laughed, and sat down beside him.
“Is she going to be sporadically sleeping for a while?” She didn’t seem to understand what was going on. He nodded.
“Yes. We have young who wake when they have the energy to do things, and snuggle right back into bed when they don’t have the energy. It wears off around the age of four.” He spoke softly to avoid waking his daughter. Paulina nodded slowly as she thought about that.
“All right.” She snuggled into him.
With his family around him, Cobalt slept well that night.
